Intro to Mushroom Foraging

  • Eli Whitney Community Center 3917 East Greensboro Chapel Hill Road Snow Camp, NC, 27349 United States (map)

The woods and fields of North Carolina produce thousands of pounds of delicious, nutrient dense edible mushrooms every year. But it's (literally) vital that you forage with the appropriate information to positively ID mushrooms. In this classroom style class we will go over 14 of the most common, readily identifiable mushrooms found in our area. Fresh or dehydrated samples will be provided for participants to touch and hold, and we'll go over the key ID methods (what it’s growing on, spore print color, fertile surface, stem and cap characteristics, etc) using plenty of pictures to gain a sense of what these mushrooms (and their lookalikes) might look like at various stages of growth. Students will leave with a handout for future reference, ideas for how to find your own safe, legal foraging spots, and resources to connect with the mushroom loving community to verify your (hopefully plentiful) future mushroom finds.
