Learn the foundation skills you need to confidently search, identify, and prepare wild edible mushrooms. We will cover 13 of the most prolific edible mushrooms found in the Carolinas, several of which are in season Right Now! Living examples of several varieties will be on hand, and participants will have the opportunity to taste Chaga Reishi Tea and try lions mane and reishi tincture. We'll end class with a quick cooking demo featuring oyster mushrooms, lions mane, and wood ear (I'll add others if foraging weather makes them available the week of class). Class is primarily classroom style with powerpoint slides. We'll have a chance to get moving and test our skills with an end of class ID quiz.
Optional post-class farm tour. After class participants are invited to stop by Haw River Mushrooms Farm (a three minute drive from the venue) for a farm tour. The tour will be from 8:15pm -8:40 pm.
Note: You'll receive a handout with basic information about the varieties covered, but in class I will recommend that every forager own at least one ID book. Two I recommend are A Field Guide to Mushrooms of the Carolinas by Alan and Arlene Bessette and The Complete Mushroom Hunter by Gary Lincoff (focused on edible mushrooms.
